About Landmark

Landmark Recordings was founded by Owen Butcher, drawing on his decades of experience with music recording, tape machines, audio technology, and a dedication to quality.

Working to IASA TC-04 standards, all media is cared for at the same high standard, whether it be a museum piece, a master music recording or a recording of a long lost loved one.

Owen has worked with some of the biggest musical acts Australia has to offer, being relied upon by INXS, Cold Chisel, The Whitlams, Split Enz, Savage Garden, and many more, to restore, enhance, digitise, and archive their famed recordings for future generations to enjoy.

He has also worked alongside the National Archives of Australia (NAA), the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA), the State Library of NSW (SLNSW), and multiple school and museum archives, to oversee outsourced digtisation projects to completion, with an over 99% successful transfer rate.

With a community minded focus, Landmark Recordings seeks to highlight and enhance the rich history of Australian audio for generations to come.

  • Professional baking services is included with every transfer, if required, using our scientific ovens.

In short, tapes are made of a strip of plastic (the backing), some glue (binder) and metal (oxide). The binder holds the oxide to the backing, however as tapes age the binder absorbs moisture causing hydrolysis. This reaction makes the binder sticky and less effective causing the oxide layer to come off during playback with irreversable results. It can also be known as ‘sticky shed syndrome’.

Baking tapes is required in most circumstances to reverse this checmical process and make the tapes playable. It will also extend the lifespan of the tapes for many years to come.

If you find tapes at home and wish to play them, we do offer a ‘bake only’ service of $33 per tape to restore them ready for playback.

  • Generally within 2 weeks. This gives us time to bake tapes if required and also perform any other treatments to make sure playback of your tapes is optimal.

For funerals we can expedite the process to meet your needs. ‘Rush’ fees will apply for other organisations.

  • Prices vary amongst the formats we have. They are generally based upon playback time of the medium and how many tapes you have. The more tapes the better the individual price, and bulk pricing is available for 20+ tapes. Please get in touch with the form at the bottom of this page to get a customised quote.

For baking of tapes only, with no digitisation required, we charge $33 per tape

  • Typically they will be sent as a download link after payment is confirmed.

For larger transfers hard drives can be organised and deliveredfor an extra fee.

  • Mail in/courier is preferred if possible and can be done any day of the week.

If your media is particularly valuable and would prefer dropoff, a specific time will need to be organised in advance.

To return your media via courier is a minimum charge of $22. Final fees will be dependent on size and weight of your media.

  • We can help. If you have flood damaged tapes in most instances we can clean and restore them back to a playable condition.

We have restored tapes involved in riverine floods, stored next to leaky septic tanks, dropped into ponds and smoke damaged from fire.

We can provide quotes for insurance purposes, so if you’re in a pinch we’re here to help.
